Old Forge Quilt Show

It's been just over a week since I went with Carolyn,one of the members from our quilt guild, to Old Forge NY to see the Quilts Unlimited Quilt Show at the Old Forge Art Center. The round trip was just under 200 miles. The day was a little overcast and we had a bit of rain on the way up. I drove and we had a nice chat during the trip which took about two hours one way. The show was in a beautiful new building with plenty of parking and a painted statue of a moose in front.

I'm sharing pictures of many of the quilts at the show in this and my next posting so you'll have to come back again to see the rest of these wonderful quilts.

It's hard to tell from the picture but the largest dragonflies were appliqued free-floating so to speak (attached only at the insects bodies) on top on the background.

This quilt displayed the flora and fauna of the Adirondack Mountains.

A denim quilt

This was digitally designed and printed on fabric in four sections, then assembled and quilted.

I love farms and barns that sport a quilt motif.

Another quilt that a photo doesn't do justice to. This had many sparkly fabrics and shiney quilting threads.

I was never a flower child but this brings back memories of riding in the back seat of a VW once...no room for my knees!

Did You Miss Me?

Okay. I admit it. I've been neglectful of my blogging. While I've been posting on our quilt guild blog  twilightstitchers92.blogspot.com on a regular basis and I've been reading the blogs I follow, I've been doing everything else imaginable...well almost. So, you ask, what else have I been doing?

The veggie garden came first. We had drought conditions this summer so the weeds didn't get ahead of me. My DH hooked up the hose and I watered the veggies every day. Still, the tomatoes weren't very good. I didn't get many useable for the second year in a row. My beans weren't as good as last year. I didn't have enough to can at one time but I did add what I harvested to the freezer. There wasn't as much summer squash and zucchini as last year but I did get enough to make a batch each of pickles and relish. The one veggie that did well was the carrots. Most of them had the diameter of tennis balls! And tasty...oh, yes! I canned 14 pints and had some leftover. Also I canned 19 quarts total of spaghetti sauce, tomatoes and tomato soup base.

One day I went picking tomatoes with a friend. We were charged only $12 a bushel.

Next year I'm growing mostly pear tomatoes. They make great sauce. My sauce cooked for two days in the crockpot. Yum!

There is nothing as good as soup made from the veggies you grow yourself!

This summer's quilting projects:

I made two of these hot mats for a guild project. Then I got to keep them for my own kitchen.

I went walking with my youngest daughter a number of times. Sometimes we walk around the neighborhood and sometimes at the park by the local lake.

Next time I post, which won't be as long as last time, I have a wonderful treat to share. One of my fellow quilt guild members and I went to a quilt show at The Old Forge Art Center, about a 2 hour drive from where we live. Lots of wonderful quilts to share with you!

Now off I go to run errands and get the weeks groceries.  Next week is forecast to be wet and stormy so I'll have plenty of  'inside' time to blog. Ta-ta for now.

Day Two...The Search Goes ON

More progress on looking for the missing CD. As you can see by the picture my bookshelves are now neat and reasonably tidy. I even filled two grocery bags with papers and old catalogs to throw out. After moving into this home four years ago I find that I still am purging out stuff that moved with me.

Well, after cleaning my bookshelves, I happened to be walking by my husband's bookshelves in the other room.  There on the top shelf were two CD cases. Hmmm, I wondered. I opened one up and started rifling through it. And there I found...you guessed it...my CD. How did it get there? Well, I admit I had lent him one of my CDs associated with the missing one a few weeks ago. I must have given that  one along with it. So...my fault! Anyways I'm glad to have the mystery solved and a cleaner bookcase to boot. And now to find the top of my desk....                                                     

And You Ask "Why Are You Cleaning Your Studio"?

I'm sure it's happened more than once to you. I know it's happened to me. Losing something that is. Somewhere in the house. A special CD given to me by a friend is suddenly missing. Can it be replaced? Yes, it can. But a friend who is very dear to me gave this CD to me. What can I say but that I want it back. No, I don't have teenagers in the house who might have inadvertently picked it up thinking it was theirs. I don't have a dog so it hasn't been chewed up and spit out. My hubby and I don't have the same taste in CDs so he didn't take it. I checked my CD rack 3 times, my box of instructional CDs, the 2 CD players in the house...not there. So the next thing is to clean my studio where I last saw it. I had projects all over the room so, first of all , get those picked up and put away. Okay, there is still some stuff on the floor where I threw it but I'm picking that up next.

Sidetracked: Started cleaning up the book case...a whole bag of reference clippings ready to throw out next garbage day. One half of the bookcase is straightened...Wow! more room to juggle books around. Now I won't have to stuff them to get them back into the bookcase.

Okay back to the cleaning.

  Or I could just quilt. The saga continues!

Road Trip

Road trip? Not really but I am driving about 30 miles north to visit a friend, give quilting lessons and have a little Bible study and midrash with her. I've never been to her house before so I'm taking my map and her phone number.

And a report on my little fig tree: We had a storm come through on Monday night. The winds must have been 75 miles an hour. I haven't seen wind that strong since I was a little girl when a hurricane hit in the Northeast. I was going to pull my tree inside for shelter when I heard the weather report earlier in the day but, alas, I forgot! I was leaning up against the window watching the lightening show when the wind hit. I literally felt the window move! Then I remembered my poor little fig tree. I ran to the front door and looked out and Oh My! I thought the tree was going to get blown right off the front porch. I didn't dare go out and rescue it because I thought I might get blown off the porch! Or the door might get ripped of it's hinges. But don't worry, my fig tree survived. And the baby fig count is now up to 10.

My SAHR is finally done!!!!!

I just had to share this. Sunny over at quiltingdreams.blog invited interested quilters to join in a stay-at-home robin a few months ago. And I'm finally done with my quilt. Yay! I decided to stop at wall hanging size instead of full size because it will great on the bare wall about our bed. That is as soon as the cornice is nailed up...that is after the hubby gets the new plumbing installed. LOL. Well anyways, my project is completed and awaits it's new location. I machine quilted everything on it but the center block. The center block is my own design and I hand quilted that part. I guess you could say I'm not a purist.

It's Gonna Be A Hot One!

The weatherman predicted temperatures up to 98 degrees today. Whew! I was outside tying up more tomato plants at 6:30 this morning to beat the heat. Watered the rhubarb and came inside escaping from the flies and mosquitoes. Then it was an omelet for breakfast and on to the computer to check out my email and the blogs I follow. I was planning to go to our local nature park with the grandchildren but rescheduled our visit until tomorrow when the temperature will be more bearable. We don't want Gramma to be hauled away for heat exhaustion do we. Today I'll stay inside and finish up my SAHR with the binding and take a picture of it for my next post.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, so they say, I purchased a fig tree from a local nursery this spring. It's sitting on my front landing and producing figs already. This fall it will go dormant and I'll insulated it well and store it our unheated shed until next spring. At last count I have 7 little figgies on it. LOL
